You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear.
     這兩種看(see/observe)的差別在那兒?
“It is simplicity itself,” said he; “my eyes tell me that on the inside of your left shoe, just where the firelight strikes it, the leather is scored by six almost parallel cuts. Obviously they have been caused by someone who has very carelessly scraped round the edges of the sole in order to remove crusted mud from it. Hence, you see, my double deduction that you had been out in vile weather, and that you had a particularly malignant boot-slitting specimen of the London slavey. As to your practice, if a gentleman walks into my rooms smelling of iodoform, with a black mark of nitrate of silver upon his right forefinger, and a bulge on the right side of his top-hat to show where he has secreted his stethoscope, I must be dull, indeed, if I do not pronounce him to be an active member of the medical profession.”
I could not help laughing at the ease with which he explained his process of deduction. “When I hear you give your reasons,” I remarked, “the thing always appears to me to be so ridiculously simple that I could easily do it myself, though at each successive instance of your reasoning I am baffled until you explain your process. And yet I believe that my eyes are as good as yours.”
“Quite so,” he answered, lighting a cigarette, and throwing himself down into an armchair. “You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear. For example, you have frequently seen the steps which lead up from the hall to this room.”

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

This is indeed a mystery,” I remarked. “What do you imagine that it means?”
I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. But the note itself. What do you deduce from it?”

I am lost without my Boswell.

James Boswell.

Sherlock Holmes: the epitome of a detective
  1. The reputation of detectives relies upon their prowess in observation, analysis, and deduction.
  2. Sherlock Holmes is characterized by his well-developed sense of observation to gather adequate clues or facts and his amazing deductive analysis to distinguish potentially meaningful information for “red herrings.”
  3. The art of detection is the process of screening out the vital elements from the seemingly incidental occurrences.
  4. “Once the impossible explanations had been eliminated, whatever remained, however improbable, must be the truth.”
  5. differential diagnosis and deductive reasoning
  6. the interlevel activity that combines attention to a range of detail from the molecular to the environmental, social, and cultural dimensions
  7. accurate knowledge
  8. cold bearing
  9. unsympathetic attitude
  10. a kind of calculating machine
  11. exemplary diagnostic physician --> the cult of Sherlockians
  12. eerie trick of spotting details
  13. keen observation and crucial insights
  14. signs/ clues

John Watson: the reliable assistant and narrator
  1. narrative as a means of organizing the details
  2. confidant (is a character in a drama or novel who plays only a minor role in the action, but serves the protagonist as a trusted friend to whom he or she confesses intimate thoughts, problem, and feelings.)
  3. To have access to a character’s state of mind and of intruding into the narrative in order to communicate such information to the reader.
  4. a medic
  5. find particular interest in the Sherlock Holmes adventures
  6. pearls of wisdom
  7. a dialogue between Watson and Holmes= a neophyte resident and attending physician
  8. overall setting of each Holmes case
  9. “inexplicable mysteries”
  10. don’t have the same capacity as his counterpart in diagnosing and deducing the case
  11. Watson looks like a beginner in each adventure and only gains further insight into the case as the chronology of the adventure progresses.

Each case can be a pedagogical showcase.

Elementary, my dear Watson!

Elementary, my dear Watson!

adjective
1.
pertaining to or dealing with elements, rudiments, or first principles:
an elementary grammar.
2.
of or relating to an elementary school :
elementary teachers.
3.
of the nature of an ultimate constituent; simple or uncompounded.
4.
pertaining to the four elements, earth, water, air, and fire, or to the great forces of nature; elemental.
5.
Chemistry. of or noting one or more elements.

基本的練習,請打開案件一: A Scandal in Bohemia, 開場第一句話: “To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman.”

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

https://sherlock-holm.es/stories/pdf/a4/1-sided/cano.pdf

Sherlock Holmes?
