作者是嵇含嗎?
《南方草木狀》的作者是嵇含嗎?不少人懷疑。我也懷疑。
但是我更想問，如果不是嵇含寫的書，為什麼會把這本書作者和嵇含聯想在一起?
李約瑟(Needham, Joseph)推論，可能是因為嵇含對植物學的興趣，並有不少相關作品:
Besides, there is independent evidence of Hsi-Han’s interest in botany,
indeed in scientific things in general. He wrote poetical essays on the Hemerocallis day-lily, on the fragrant huai tree, on Hibiscus flowers, millets, evergreen trees, and sweet melons; they
are mostly lost but the prefaces survive. He also wrote exordia on the gearing
of mills and on “cooling regimen powder,” a mixture of mineral and plant drugs fashionable
in his time. (449-440)
李約瑟的見解在於掌握植物學史的細膩之處，而非作者與權威的定位。李約瑟從現存不多的資料中，看出嵇含的植物學或是科學的興趣，例如，嵇含的作品出現過萱草 (Hemerocallis day-lily)、櫰香樹、木槿、長生樹、孤黍、甜瓜等植物描述。此外，在嵇含的《八磨賦》的序言提到石磨；還寫過「寒食散」。以上的資料出處的仔細介紹可參考李學勇中譯本的註釋 (頁489)；當中我最感興趣的是嵇含的「櫰香賦」，收錄在《藝文類聚》及《太平御覽》的序文，依照李學勇註釋，櫰香樹，又稱化香樹，學名是Platycarya
strobilacea，樹根燃燒時有香氣。有一說法，《救荒本草》第267則的「兠櫨樹」可能就是化香樹，可參閱倪根金/校注版本《救荒本草校注》(頁245-246)，果真如此，飢荒時，亦可食用此樹樹葉。
